Following high school Dick attended UNL for a couple of semesters. Then he moved to Vail Colorado (in the years when Vail was just becoming established) in the mid-1960's. Dick then lived in St. Paul, Minnesota during the 1970's, then moved back to Omaha for a few years, and finally moved to upper New York state in the 1980's. He worked mostly in the food industry, and was Food & Beverage Manager at the old New Tower "Crystal Tree" Restaurant. In New York state he was Head Chef at a small monastery near Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Dick's health began to fail while he was living in New York. He finally died of natural causes in August 1994, and is buried in the Durfee family plot in a cemetery near Spirit Lake, Iowa.
