Classmate Honors

Steve Durham featured in Dallas Morning News

Steve had a serious bout with cancer in 2018. The Dallas Morning News carried a feature about him, his life, his recovery, and his philanthropy. It's a wonderful story but, fair warning, there are a lot of ads to navigate early on.

Bob Saffer now in WHS Athletic Hall of Fame

Congratulations to Bob Saffer, who was inducted into the Westside High School Hall of Fame  this year.

Bob earned letters in both basketball and golf at Westside each year from his Sophomore year to graduation. In 1959 he led Westside to the state team championship and, shooting a 71, won indivudal honors as well.

Upon graduation from Westside, Bob attended the University of Arizona for two years, then transferred to the University of Nebraska.

In 1997 after a successful business career, Bob became a Class A PGA golf professional and was named 2009 PGA Teacher of the Year in Nebraska.  In 2010, Bob was invited by the PGA to showcase his talents in teaching golf at the PGA National Convention.

As we all should remember, Bob married his highschool sweetheart, Gayle Fiala.  The couple have two daughters, Julie and Leighann, and are proud grandparents of seven.

Bob is standing second from the left in this photo of the inductees taken by our classmate Stan Bach. Stan's brother Alan (seated in the middle) was also inducted into Westside High School Hall of Fame.

Bob Duncan Named King of Ak-Sar-Ben, 2012

Wearing a Jun Kaneko costume he'd requested permission to have designed for him, Bob Duncan was crowned the 116th King of Ak-Sar-Ben on Saturday, October 14th. The story about the costume and the event was in the Omaha World-Herald. So was the story of Bob's success in business and philanthropy that earned him the honor.
